The Digital World is Going Mobile

In the world of today, more and more people are relying on their smartphones to go to the internet. This is because they are portable and come with larger screens. Websites have also been optimized as mobile sites for use on the smart devices. Whether you’re shopping for something on amazon or catching up with your social media, mobiles have stolen the limelight away from computers. The fact that we can take the internet everywhere with us is what has brought about the craze. People feel secure when they know that they have an internet connection at all times.

The Digital World is Going Mobile

Reason to Make Your Brand Go Mobile

The first reason is ads. There are many ads targeted at mobile devices through free and premium apps. By going mobile, your ads have the ability to reach a wider audience, depending on the customers that you’re targeting.

13% of the internet traffic around the world is accessed through mobile devices and this means that a good number of your customer could be accessing your company website from smartphones. That is why it is important to make sure that you have a site that is mobile friendly so as to enhance the experience of those that are likely to become your customers.

This is a day and age where most brands are trying to dominate the mobile space by creating their own apps, no matter the type of business that they’re doing. This apps tend to create awareness of the companies and will therefore bring in more customers in the long run. Most people want to have their services in their hands.

As with any other new piece of technology or industry development, it is vital that your company’s digital marketing plan includes a mobile strategy. Whether that is through social media, a mobile site, more targeted ads or your own apps, the objective remains the same. Your company needs to follow its target market wherever it goes, and if that means going mobile, your strategy should reflect that.

These are some of the reasons why it is important to make your brand go mobile. Now we are going to look at a prepaid phone guide to give you an idea of the smartphone that you can buy to keep you connected to the internet wherever you go. The market is flooded with many different makes and types of phones that all come with different features, and it is important for you to have the one that will best suit your needs.

Samsung Galaxy J7 (Boost Mobile)

Think of it as a bigger, more powerful version of the entry-level Galaxy J3, boasting the latest Android software, a good processor, and an attractive display. It also comes with some relatively rare features for a midrange phone, like dual-band Wi-Fi and NFC for mobile payments. It’s a solid option for if you’re looking for a capable phablet that won’t break the bank.

Measuring in at 6.0 by 3.1 by 0.3 inches (HWD) and 6.0 ounces, the J7 is basically a bigger version of the J3 (5.6 by 2.8 by 0.3 inches, 4.9 ounces), which in turn resembles the Galaxy S4. The phone has Samsung’s standard design language, including two capacitive controls and a physical home button on the front, a band of faux-chrome plastic along the sides, and a back made of sturdy white polycarbonate.

The power button is located on the right while the volume rocker is on the left. A 3.5mm audio jack and port sit on the bottom. The back is removable and peeling it off gives access to the replaceable battery and card slot. There’s also a microSD card slot. Samsung disables moving apps to internal storage for Marshmallow devices, but one can store music, images, and videos on a card.

Samsung has always been good at making high quality screens, and the J7 is no exception. It’s complimented by a bright 5.5-inch, 1,280-by-720-pixel Super AMOLED screen with 267 pixels per inch. Icons and graphics look sharp, viewing angles are great, and the screen is easily usable outside, thanks to Outdoors mode, which increases brightness.

Network Performance and Connectivity

The J7 supports LTE bands 2/4/5/12/25/26/41. Voice calls tend to have robotic edge, making conversations a little unpleasant. On the good side, earpiece volume is loud and noise cancellation is good at blotting out background sound.

The J7 comes with dual-band Wi-Fi and NFC. The former makes for improved Wi-Fi performance, while the latter allows you to use Android Pay and other payment services.

Processor, Battery, and Camera

The J7 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor clocked at 1.4GHz. It got a score of 33,107 on the AnTuTu benchmark, which tests overall system performance. Performance is proved stellar when it comes to launching apps and multitasking, performing very well even when multiple apps are running in the background due to the 2GB RAM. The RAM is so good, it is easy to play high-end games like Asphalt 8 and GTA San Andreas with minimal control response time.

The phone comes with an excellent battery life that has clocked 6 hours and 21 minutes according to rundown test with full screen brightness and full screen video over LTE.

The 13-megapixel camera is not as strong although it takes very clear shots, especially outdoors. It tends to leave out fine details such as individual branches or tree leaves. Color reproduction also tends to vary dramatically. Outdoors the reds and greens tend to dominate, while indoors colors are a lot more accurate. In the front, there is a 5-megapixel selfie camera that works well except in low light settings.

Software and Apps

The J7 comes with the latest Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow software with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI extensions running on top. This brings a number of visual changes including custom app icons, an altered notification shade, and a different settings menu.

There are also some custom features like the outdoors mode, Theme Selector and a Smart Manager, which cleans up used space and background processes. It also comes with power saving mode that reduces performance and turns off network connectivity and Ultra Power Saving mode, which sets the phone to black and white to conserve battery juice.

The Samsung Galaxy J7 is a solid contender for the best mid-range smartphone on the market, coming with smooth performance on both day-to-day tasks and gaming, but the mixed reviews the camera received may put some off.

LG V10 (T-Mobile)

The LG V10 stands out with its expandable storage, removable battery, and a handy secondary display unlike any other that you can find on the market. It also comes with one of the best cameras that you can find on a smartphone. The only thing that holds it back is the poor battery life and excessive bloatware, and anyone would rather go for the iPhone 6s Plus or the Nexus 6P unless they are very focused on photography.

Design and Features

The V10 is 6.28 by 3.12 by 0.34 inches (HWD) and weighs 6.77 ounces, which is a bit large even for a phablet. It’s even bigger than the Galaxy Note 5 and the Nexus 6P, and about the same size with the iPhone 6s Plus.

It has stainless steel strips sit on the sides and a textured panel on the back. The power and volume buttons are located under the back camera, and the power button also acts as a finger print scanner. The phone has no buttons on the sides.

The V10 might not be waterproof, but when it comes to durability, it can take quite a beating. It also comes with a removable battery and microSD card slot. You can expand the memory to 200GB. Lastly, the phone also comes with an infrared blaster that enables one to control their TV’s or set top boxes.

Display and Camera

The phone comes with a 5.7-inch display, 2,560-by-1,440-pixel IPS LCD. It is clear even under direct sunlight and has very excellent viewing angles. At the right corner of the V10 is a separate 2.1-inch display with 1,040-by-160 resolution, which operates independently of the primary display, hosting quick-launch app buttons, display notifications, favorite contacts, calendar events, and media controls.

The second screen enables one to see notifications even when the rest of the main screen is off, also providing access to the camera and settings. To interact further, one would have to unlock the primary screen.

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 MSM8992 2.0GHz
  • 4GB RAM
  • Internal Storage: 64GB
  • Removable Storage: microSD (Max 128GB)
  • Cameras: Front 5MP, Rear 16MP
  • 7 inches, 1440 x 2560 pixels (IPS)
  • Android 5.1.1 Lollipop
  • 42 lbs

  • Durable design
  • Large, sharp screen
  • Fast performance
  • Pleasant UI experience
  • Great camera

  • Relatively complicated camera manual controls
  • Average battery life

The LG V10 offers more features than most other smartphones in its league. Moreover, it doesn’t have any serious weaknesses. If you are looking for a premium Android smartphone, the V10 is a near-perfect choice.

Moto E 2nd Generation (Verizon)

  • Locked cell phones are compatible with GSM carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile only.
  • 4G LTE speed for browsing the web, streaming music, playing games and watching videos, 5MP rear camera with a VGA front facing camera
  • 5″ qHD display – Sharpest Display in its class, personalize with colored bands
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor with a 1.2GHz quad-core CPU and advanced graphics
  • Water-repellant coating and Corning Gorilla Glass for enhance durability
  • Android Lollipop 5.0 operating system with one guaranteed software update, All-Day battery performance with a 2390mAh battery

This is one of the good smartphones that are priced below $100. Nowadays, entry level smartphones are very similar to high end ones save for things like the processors, cameras and display specs. The moto E might be made of simple material and not have things like leather or wood paneling, but it will get you onto the internet and do most of the things that you need to do. This is the perfect choice if you don’t have money for the pricier handsets.

The second generation of the Moto E unapologetically takes after its bigger and older brother, the Moto G 4G LTE, being 5.11 by 2.63 by 0.48 inches (HWD) and 5.11 ounces.  The matte plastic cover of the Moto E feels relatively thick and somewhat heavy but is still comfortable to hold and use due to the curved back, rounded weight and the evenly balanced weight.

The Power button and volume rocker on the right edge feel a little mushy. A tiny notch on the phone’s bottom left lets you peel away the removable plastic accent border surrounding the phone, revealing microSD and mini SIM card ports on the left edge.

It comes with a 4.5 qHD display with a resolution of 960 by 540 pixels (256 ppi), which isn’t particularly sharp but suitable for a smartphone in the price range. Off-center viewing angles aren’t the best since they darken, making it almost impossible to see anything. There is a front facing speaker next to the earpiece that plays music pretty loudly without distortion.

The call quality of the phone is good, the earpiece loud and clear. The voice cancellation also works fine as the person on the other end of the line won’t hear noise. There is still some noise that is bound to make it through, but that is normal.

The Moto E comes with a quad-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 with 1GB RAM, meaning that it can easily give the Google Nexus 5 a run for its money. The Moto E will smoothly play Asphalt 8 on high setting with a little stuttering here and there. The stock Android 5.0 comes with features such as Assist, Migrate, and Alert.

The 2390 mAh battery can put an iPhone 6 battery to shame because it can go quite a mile before dying out.

The phone also comes with a 5-megapixel rear facing camera and a front VGA that is grainy and unclear. The video resolution is 720p at 30fps.

  • Grippy frame
  • Sharp display
  • LTE connectivity
  • Long battery life

  • Poor camera
  • Struggles to play graphics intensive games

The Moto E stands out in the budget segment because it runs pure Android, makes as little compromise as possible in hardware and is more reliable in performance as compared to competitors.

LG Tribute 2 (Virgin Mobile)

  • Enhanced-LTE (where available) and 4G LTE/3G
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.2 GHz Quad-Core Processor
  • 5″ Touchscreen Display, 8 GB memory (supports 32 GB microSD card)
  • Android 5.1 (Lollipop)
  • 5MP Camera, GPS Navigation, FM radio

The LG Tribute 2 is yet another phone that falls below the $100 mark while delivering a modern, reliable, and enjoyable Android experience. Some compromises have to be made, but as a basic smartphone, there’s little to complain about since you’ll pretty much get to talk, stream music or browse without a problem. This is the perfect phone for the price cautious shoppers.

It comes with a 4.5-inch, 800-by-480-pixel IPS LCD that isn’t particularly sharp at 207ppi. The color reproduction is lively, the contrast good. There’s some color change when viewing the screen at an angle although at that price point, that is not something to complain about.

The call quality is excellent and the voice cancellation feature also works just fine. The connectivity options are 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and GPS. Wi-Fi is limited to the 2.4GHz frequency, which means it won’t be able to connect to faster 5GHz networks.

Performance and Android

The Tribute 2 comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC, clocking 1.2GHz with 1GB RAM. It works just fine and competes with other entry level and mid-range smartphones well. The Tribute runs Android 4.4.2 with LG’s Optimus UI on top. Most of the tweaks are visual, with the quick settings in the notification panel. It comes with a KnockOn double-tap to wake gesture. The volume up key can be assigned things like launching the camera from sleep by long pressing it.

The Tribute 2 comes with 4GB of internal storage, with only 1.4GB available to users out of the box. Unfortunately, you’re stuck with some apps, like the boring Lumen Toolbar app that manages to find its way onto every carrier phone. The phone has very little storage space, which might not be good for you if you are into installing many apps. There is a microSD slot under the back cover for added storage. The 2100 mAh battery is sufficient for normal use although it might need a recharge before the end of the day.

Camera and Conclusions

It comes with a 5-megapixel, rear-facing camera that does not work too well in dark places. The video churns out 1080p although the images are grainy.

  • Sharp display
  • Strong performance
  • Removable battery
  • Expandable storage

  • Low internal storage
  • Pre-installed bloatware

If you want a powerful budget phone with great design and a removable battery, go for the Tribute 2.

HTC Desire 626s (Virgin Mobile)

  • With HTC Themes, you can create a signature display, icons, and ringtone based on your favorite photo.
  • 8MP Main Camera and up to 2MP front-facing Camera
  • Featuring an Expandable memory of up to 200GB

HTC has designed some of the best looking premium Android smartphones, and even their budget offerings score high on build quality. The Desire 626s comes in a stylish unibody design that will catch the attention of those after budget phones. It comes in polycarbonate plastic and in an array of colors. Thin screen bezels surround the phone and feels solid to the touch. It is a must for most budget phones to sacrifice some of the features, but the HTC 626s ranks well, coming with a 5-inch qHD display, 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, and even though it isn’t Full-HD, it still looks bright, colorful and sharp. Powered by a Quad Core Snapdragon 210 processor along with 1GB of RAM, making it quite responsive. It performs well under most circumstances, though graphics and memory intensive tasks can make it lag.

It comes packed with 8GB of internal storage and also has a microSD card slot for additional storage. The 8-megapixel camera will bring your pictures to life although it can only record videos in 720p resolution. The 626s runs the latest Android Lollipop 5.1 operating system, which isn’t a big deal for premium devices but it’s appreciated in budget devices most of which are still on much older Android systems.

  • Stylish look
  • Solid build
  • Sharp display
  • Decent cameras

  • Speaker has low volume
  • Limited internal storage

The 626s offers similar performance as its competitors but feels more premium as it mimics the design of higher end HTC devices.

Samsung Galaxy Prevail LTE 4.5-inch (Boost Mobile)

  • Android 4.4.4 Kit Kat OS
  • Spark LTE
  • 5MP Camera
  • Android 4.4.4 Kit Kat OS
  • Spark LTE
  • 5MP Camera
  • Display: Diagonal Size – 4.5-Inch
  • Battery: Capacity 2000 mAh

Design, Features, and Call Quality

One can easily confuse this Samsung Galaxy Prevail LTE for a mini of the Galaxy S5. It comes with a good size for one-handed use, but can feel a little chunky at 5.16 by 2.68 by 0.35 inches and 4.94 ounces. It has a matte plastic finish and the subdued faux-metal edges.

It comes with a 4.5-inch, 800-by-480-pixel TFT LCD that looks both dull and muted when you compare it to the Moto E’s sharper, punchier 960-by-540 LCD. The color saturation looks washed out unlike what we’re used to seeing on Samsung devices. Maximum brightness is also very low making it very difficult to use outdoors.

Boost phones connect to Sprint’s nationwide network, and the Prevail supports both 3G CDMA (800/850/1900MHz) and Sprint’s tri-band Spark LTE (850/1900/2500MHz). people in areas with strong Sprint LTE coverage are lucky because they can get great internet speeds. The call quality of the device is average while the noise cancellation is 50/ 50. Where there is no LTE coverage, users will have to work with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, on the slower 2.4GHz band. The phone also comes with Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS radios.

Performance and Android

This device comes with Qualcomm’s 64-bit Snapdragon 410 processor, clocking 1.2GHz with 1GB RAM. It runs on Android 4.4.2, with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top.  It has ultra-power Saving mode, offering extended battery life by paring down functionality to basic apps. It comes with 8GB of built-in storage, of which 4.95GB is available to users out of the box. The 5MP camera works just fine, although can be wanting in darker rooms.

Tethering Your Cell Phone for Internet Access

Cell phones are an incredible technological advancement that put so much information and versatility in the palms of our hands. Unfortunately, they don’t always have the features we crave in their larger counterparts: laptops and tablets. So, when we need a bigger screen and more keyboard, how can we make those smartphones work for us? Learn more about tethering your cell phone for internet access.

Of course, a dead phone won’t do you much good. So, if necessary, get an iPhone 6 battery replacement before beginning this tutorial. You can get the replacement for less than $20 on Amazon. And, if you don’t know how to take your iPhone 6 apart to install the new CE/ROHS certified battery, you can always watch the videos provided by YouTube. Everything you need to get your phone back to like-new functionality is available at that link. Then, you can move forward in the realm of tethering.

Tethering Your Cell Phone for Internet Access

The Why’s and How’s of Tethering

People frequently wonder how they can use their cell phones to provide their laptops with internet access. This process is called tethering. While tethering itself, isn’t that big of deal, the various service providers have their own rules and regulations based on their plans and pricing. And, cell phone models have brand specific issues as well. Therefore, we intend to offer you some very basic information on the why’s and how’s of tethering. Here’s what you need:

  1. Mobile Device– If you plan on going online with your cell phone acting as the modem, you will need whatever mobile device you intend to use. That can be a tablet or a laptop.
  2. Data-Ready Cell– This just means that you have access to a cell phone that is ready and able to go online on its own. So, if you only use free Wi-Fi when it’s available, then you can’t employ your phone as a modem. You need your own data plan. Learn more.
  3. Data-plan– Since we mentioned that in number 2 it seemed like a good idea to delve into this concept a little more deeply. Your wireless provider will offer you several options in the world of data. Some providers offer unlimited data, whereas others cap it off. Smartphones almost always have to maintain a data plan in order to be utilized. So, if you have one then you also have a data plan. You should contact your provider to know what your data-plan entails, though, as tethering could put you over your limits and allow you to incur unwanted costs.
